The following is a list of workshops and presentations currently available from Friends within Southeastern Yearly Meeting.  Recommendations and suggestions for presenters came through SEYM’s constituent meetings.  Those listed have the approval of their Meeting and are willing to travel to SEYM meetings and worship groups. The list includes:

1.     the name of the presenter or leader,

2.     his or her meeting affiliation,

3.     contact information,

4.     title and brief description of topic(s).

Details regarding the workshop/presentation and arrangements for travel expenses, hospitality, honorarium, etc. are to be made directly between the requesting Meeting and the presenter.

Additional recommendations for the list are welcome.  Meeting approval of the recommendation should be communicated by the Meeting clerk to Nancy Fennell, nancyf@strato.net, who will then follow-up with the presenter.  It is recommended that the presenter have an on-going care committee within their Meeting for support, guidance, and accountability.

Currently under the care of SEYM’s IBM and EC clerk, the workshop/presentation list will be reviewed and updated periodically.

1.     A Friends Conflict Resolution Model.
As Quakers, we have long taken ourselves to task for the fact that we avoid handling conflict in our midst.  Defining conflict as “a serious and prolonged struggle accompanied by anger,” this workshop demonstrates that ordinary Friends from even small meetings have the tools necessary to deal with serious conflict.  In fact, the skills needed are practiced in community on a regular basis.  We will share our concerns about dealing with conflict and explore how our common fears and misunderstandings may make us reluctant to serve our community in the sacred task of seeking peace in the face of conflict.

2. Women’s Spiritual Retreats
A community- and relationship-building experience of focusing, exploring, and sharing issues of importance in women’s personal, spiritual, and community life. In the past seven years, Nancy has facilitated women Friends in exploring such issues as: the stewardship of our lives, naming and claiming our gifts, practicing inner peace, leadings, living our love, deep listening, and being “simply me.”

Nancy has completed the two-year Spiritual Nurture Program of the School of the Spirit and is currently serving on the School of the Spirit Board of Trustees.
Hersh, Kathy  Miami  khersh@dslx.net.

The Bullying Epidemic: How to Drain the Swamp; a Holistic Approach
Kathy chairs the Miami-Dade Community Task Force for Bullying Prevention.  The Task Force was instrumental in getting Miami-Dade County Public Schools to develop a bullying prevention curriculum for PreK-12 and train educators and school staff in effective intervention.  She explains how to form an effective grassroots coalition of parents, students, educators, counselors and child advocates.  She advocates a whole school/whole community approach to bullying reduction and prevention, starting with the premise that bullies are victims, too.  Kathy works with a state Coalition for Safe Schools to pass legislation making bullying prevention programs and training mandatory in all public schools in Florida.

Howell, Nancy Ft. Myers

Counter-recruiting in the High Schools
How two women set up counter-recruiting tables in five Lee County High Schools for a year, after which the school board required the schools to restrict military recruiters (and us) to the Career Counselor’s office, where students can see recruiters by appointment only.  Our focus was on fully-informed good decisions by students, which we argued was more likely to happen after students graduated.

Klingel, Mary Jo  Ft. Laud.  mjklingelftlq@earthlink.net

1.     QEW: Quaker Earthcare Witness
The focus of this presentation is to help Friends increase their knowledge of QEW.  The goals are:  (1.) to understand our environmental crisis as, at it’s base, a spiritual crisis, (2) to introduce QEW by discussing it’s spiritual focus, it’s efforts to assist monthly meeting in their environmental work and to describe the projects that QEW is supporting, and (3) to help monthly meetings identify specific ways that QEW can help them with environmental work within the monthly meeting.

2.     A Deeper Look at the Spiritual Implications of the Environmental Crisis:
or “I’ve Changed My Light Bulbs; Now What Do I Do?”
Using presentations, group discussion and worship sharing, this workshop has the following goals: (1) to identify ways that we are unconsciously embedded in our culture to the detriment of our environment, (2) to utilize familiar Quaker processes as a link to the “re-imagining” of our world, (3) to understand ourselves as one part of a huge and connected web of Life.

3.     Embodied Worship
As a psychotherapist, a Quaker and a practitioner of Authentic Movement, Mary Jo offers a unique blend of gentle, body-focused experiences combined with worship.  This workshop is grounded in the belief that “that of God in all of us” includes “that of God” in our bodies.  The goals of the workshop are: (1) to identify the effects of culture on Friend’s perceptions of themselves as embodied or living in a body, (2) to teach gentle and respectful techniques for enhancing connection with one’s body, and (3) to offer methods that assist us in welcoming and decoding our body’s messages, leading to a greater sense of being at peace inside one’s own skin.

Yocum, Cecelia  Tampa  ceceyocum@aol.com

1.     Friends Peace Teams
Cecelia is SEYM’s representative to Friends Peace Teams, a group she has been working and traveling with for over 10 years.  She presents community trauma healing in Africa and Columbia.

The Goals of the trauma healing programs in those countries are:

  1. To increase awareness and understanding of the concepts of trauma and grief among trauma survivors of war and genocide
  2. To create lasting relationships across polarized identities
  3. To build community capacity to respond effectively to the emotional consequences of war.
  4. To encourage and support communities working together across identity lines to jointly address the emotional consequences of war and to rebuild their communities
  5. To promote reconciliation as a fundamental component of trauma healing, and to promote healing as integral to any genuine post-conflict reconstruction.

In the workshop you will learn about techniques to help trauma survivors that are used in psychoeducational workshops, which could be also be adapted to individual and group work in the US. It is an interactive workshop that hopefully you will find inspiring.

2.     Enhancing Your Talks and Presentations
Learn ways to bring more interaction to your talks and presentations by adding in more demonstrations and activities. For example, Stand in the Circle, Stand on the Line, Concentric Circles, etc. Bring something you want to develop and we will see how we can all help to bring more interaction and zing to it.
