Dearest Talia, it sounds like you are going to have a great summer. I am 
really happy about that. Where is Two Trees? Do I know it?

You and Sebastian are so fortunate to have been born in America. Even 
though there are modern places in Africa where people have the same 
things we have, most of the children here have no shoes or one pair, 
wear used clothing and work hard to help their families. Every day I see 
small children carrying their baby brother or sister in their arms or in 
a sling on their back. I also see hundreds of children after school 
carrying large jugs of water or bundles of firewood on their heads along 
the dusty roads up and down steep hills. They don't have toys; they play 
with toys they make from sticks and stones. Most of the girls wear their 
hear completely cut off. I have been told it is for equality in school 
because hair care products cost money and many don't have. It is also 
for health reason since water is so scarce. Washing and keeping hair 
clean takes extra soap and water.

There are two ways people here can live. One way is to live off the 
vegetables they grow and the chickens, goats and cows they raise and, 
when they need to but paraffin (for light at night) or salt and sugar, 
they sell something.They also have to sell something to pay for a doctor 
when they get sick. Another way to live is get a job and earn money to 
buy what you need to live. Many do that but salaries are very very low 
so few employed people have enough money. And, many people do both  -  
have a job and also keep their homestead (shamba) and farm. Education is 
the way out of poverty so parents try to put their children through 
school where they can acquire the skills and knowledge they need to earn 
a living wage.
