James and the 2 boys (Isaiah and Jesse) entertained
themselves during the two days of seminar and before we went to the lake.

The Mission in Turkana in involved in many projects besides the church.
First of all - water, water, water - this is a full time family
occupation. The mission has put in about 3 or 4 but only one is still
producing potable water. They also run an orphanage, several primary and
grade schools, some rentals for income, youth programs and women's
projects. The Board has been functioning for a long time as well as they
know how but apparently hit some snags so Eden and Muhanji organized the
seminar as a training session about board organization, the roles and
responsibilities of the different officers, how they relate to one
another, how the finances should be appropriately and legally
structured, how to approach an action plan, etc. Eden's presentation on
finance covered everything from types of income, balance sheets,
income/expense sheets and the importance of creating a budget. They also
made a chart showing the connections between village meetings, quarterly
meetings, yearly meetings, FUM, and the Mission Board. They wrote a
Vision Statement: "To reach, equip and energize the pastoral community
spiritually, mentally and physically for the glory of God" and a Mission
Statement: "Create Christian Quaker communities that discern and obey
God in holistic outreach in discipleship, education, peace, integrity and
sustainability development. I was asked to make a presentation about
Meeting for Worship With a Concern for Business and discernment. I could
have been ever so much better prepared had I known before I left all my
materials in Kisumu but did my best. I was very aware, and said so, that
all I could talk about was Quakerism from the context of an unprogrammed
American Friend and that they would have to take from it what might work
for them in a Turkana context. I reviewed the Testimonies and wove them
into meeting for business and shared words and phrases such as "in the
manner of Friends", reaching "unity" and included a piece about the
value of silence as a means of refocusing when things get dicey. I had
to speak with pauses so what I said could be translated into Kiswahili
for some and into Turkana for the old men who only spoke their mother
tongue.

The seminar was attended by approximately 12 board members, 3 women and
9 men. They all attended in western attire out of respect for the
occasion, even though they usually wear their traditional clothing at
home. I particularly noted two elderly men (in conversation respectfully
referred to as "old man") who were village elders. They wore ill fitting
mitumba (second hand clothes) and firestones (sandals made from old
tires - many, many men wear them) and yet gave an air of wisdom and
dignity and were given a lot of respect. After one was asked to offer a
prayer he did and then led the group in a song that had a traditional
jumping up and down step. He was wonderful! Between sessions, before and
after prayer and at meals Kenyan Quakers frequently sing many lovely
songs (hymns) that have the most beautiful melodies and make you want to
move. Their relationships with God and Jesus are transparent and figure
in their lives in a large way. Although some are familiar with the finer
points of Quakerism (one young man is active in Young Friends and has
been to a gathering in the U.S.) most are very Christian but not as
familiar with Friends practices. It was nice to be asked to share with
them some of what is important to us.

The board members left with a list of plans to start working on:
investigate leasing some land, building rental units and renovating some
buildings. All of the departing comments from the Board were glowing
with gratitude for having been given some guidelines and a structure to
follow. We all went to bed Monday night grateful that all had gone well
and looking forward to some vacation time without any work or computers
or cellphones. That trip will be in Installment Three. Right now we
have to get ready to go to a restaurant here in Kisumu on Lake Victoria
for Isaiah's 12th birthday party.

Love and hugs,
Lisa
