I went
with Eden to her women's Bible Study group. Interesting. It's a pretty
fundamentalist group, other than Eden who is their liberal from Boston.
However, they are all doing amazing things here so who cares? One is a
65 year old caring for 19 street children and is in the process of
building a "children's village" - a school and two houses with 2 house
parents in each. She raises the money on her own plus uses her
retirement. She sold everything she owned in California and plans to
stay here for the duration. (Yesterday we saw two street kids and one
had a soda bottle in his mouth. Eden said he was sniffing glue. The
woman who cares for them says that is one of their survival tools.

Yesterday I worked in the office and sat with Muhanji for a long while
considering where I might be able to help. For starters I am going to
work on a little pamphlet describing Friends schools. This is badly
needed now that the Quakers are beginning to organize. There are over
200 so called Friends schools but many don't even know what that means,
they lost the connection to Quakers so long ago. One of their goals is
to strengthen the Quakerism aspect of the Friends schools and they would
like me to help train their pastors in Quakerism. Imagine that? If this
goes anywhere we are going to need a lot of Fox, Brinton, Punchon, etc
etc etc.

Eden has given me a lot of Quaker history material. It seems it all
started with a handful of Quakers from the midwest over 100 years ago.
Because there were so many Christian missionaries coming in the early
1900s, the Africans didn't always differentiate between one Protestant
sect and another. This is now a Christian country and all the schools
teach a faith based program Friday afternoons. The govt pays for the
teachers and the churches supply the buildings, buses, etc. High school
classes range from 40 to 50 students and elem 60 to 70. When the govt
declared that all elem educ was free they didn't add teachers when the
enrollments swelled.

Tomorrow we are going to a meeting of peace activists in Kakamega but I
don't know if we'll be spending the night. Love and Light to you all.
Lisa

--
This message has been scanned for viruses and
dangerous content by MailScanner, and is
believed to be clean.
