John Muhanji and a schools
committee put together an action plan and he wanted my feedback.Of
course I had many questions and you know I had a lot of ideas.I am
sensitive to the fact that some of what I offer may not be culturally
appropriate but John said to plow ahead. He is looking for "American
education" input and wants school leaders to think outside the Kenya
box. I submitted my paper last night and am looking forward to talking
with him about it. Maybe this afternoon. Nothing here happens on
"muzungu" (foreigner or white people) time. Kenya time is like Jamaica
time - soon come.

Staying over last night was Peter, one of the leaders of the Turkana
mission, and tonight comes another Turkana man, their pastor. The pastor
is on a two year leave to attend university for further training in
management. His vision is to spread their work into Sudan. The Turkana
live in the desert up north near Sudan. The young men live a nomadic
life because they must take the goats where there is water. The older
men and women stay in the village. The mission is encouraging the
children to go to school and to finish. An educated girl is worth more
than one who has not finished school and who has never gone. Peter is
the only member of his family to have gone to school. They also keep
camels but only for the milk, meat and skins. They do not ride them.
That is considered abuse . When Peter's brother was married his mother
paid a bride-price of 4 camels and something like 75 goats. We are
planning a trip up there at the end of May when Eden and John will lead
some training workshops for pastors and meeting leaders.

I am learning that a pastor fulfills multiple functions. In addition to
holding worship services they are very involved in all aspects of what a
community might need - education and health particularly. Very often
in Turkana, Peter says, the pastor is awakened at all hours to transport
someone with a snake or scorpion bite to the hospital. Right now the
only car they have is broken and waiting for parts from England. It was
donated by British Friends in the 70s or 80s. The parts are not
available here. Eden's dream is to buy them a vehicle that can be
repaired in Kenya. Repairing cars and fixing flats is a way of life
here. Actually, fixing everything is a way of life. Buying a new
anything is seldom considered. Fix it and make it work is the way. Like
I said, "things" are expensive; labor is very cheap. Eden's other dream
is to create a mobile clinic to reach the Turkana in remote places for
HIV/AIDS screening, immunizations, prenatal care, health education,
etc.. One in five babies in Kenya die from malaria so just distributing
sleeping nets is saving lives.

It's weird. At home I am addicted to the morning paper and a crossword
puzzle. Here I have not missed that at all. I have no clue as to what is
happening in the US. The issues here make all my worries in the U.S.
seem petty and inconsequential. When Friends here are only concerned
with helping their people stay alive and get an education, what I bicker
about seems absurd. My biggest problem right now is that, all of a
sudden, my bank doesn't recognize my password. If I don't get it up and
running soon I may have to ask someone in Lake Worth to go to WaMu and
have a chat. I'll let someone know.

At the school that Isaiah and Jesse go to it is non-uniform day. If the
student pays 50 Ksh, they can wear what they want. The money goes to
charity. Jesse went as a king and Isaiah as a Jedi. The regular uniform
is a navy school t-shirt and khaki shorts, pants or skirts. Tonight,
because having these Turkana men visit is a special occasion, we are
going to a "real" restaurant on the Lake. Lake Victoria is the 2nd
largest lake in the world, after Lake Superior.

That's it for now. Love to all,
Lisa

--
This message has been scanned for viruses and
dangerous content by MailScanner, and is
believed to be clean.
