Went to a tiny,
interfaith Kenyan church service today - very pleasant and cozy. Then we
went to a shack on the shore of Lake Victoria for fish ---- whole
tilapia fried - eyes and all. No scales though. The waiter brings a
pitcher of hot water, a bar of soap and a bowl for you to wash you hands
before and after the meal - air dry. The entire meal is eaten with one's
fingers.

Note: Labor is cheap, very cheap. "Things" are expensive.

A Quaker from EFI stayed the night here yesterday. He is commonly
referred to as a missionary in circles hereabouts because he heads up
the project of a faith-based group. They are headquartered in the state
of Wash. They distribute molds to make water filters. He travels all
over where invited (Africa, Caribbean, India) First he shows a metal
worker how to make and weld the mold. Then he creates a "water board"
and trains this group of men and women how to make the filters with
concrete poured into the molds. When they are all set, he instructs them
how to fill it with what kinds of layers of sand and how to make it
work.Everyone gets a certificate after completing the course. These
little committees are like a cooperative - they learn how to budget,
etc. Not exactly a micro-grant but the same idea. It is like a gift that
keeps on giving because once they have the mold they can make their own
and then make more and more to sell - very important because jobs are
hard to find. Once they have been operational for a few weeks the
filters are 95 to 99 % effective at eliminating all the bad bacteria -
critical in a country with so many water born diseases. I saw them
making them already at the Lugulu hospital which is sponsoring the
project there on the hospital grounds. Every ward will have one! That is
so exciting for a place that actually has little to no running water and
must purchase all drinking water. After they have all they need, they
will begin to sell them and, hopefully, turn a profit for the hospital.

Last week two other Quakers from Australia stayed the night. They live
about 1 1/2 hours from here and their "mission" is to teach literacy in
the schools as volunteers and they are hosting AVP classes at their place.

I am getting the idea. James and Eden Grace and their two sons, Jesse
and Isaiah, are committed to hospitality to all who are led to be here
and serve in whatever way. I am so glad to be here. I don't know how
much help I'll be but I'm learning so much, my head is spinning.

Off to bed. Good night and God bless,
Lisa

--
This message has been scanned for viruses and
dangerous content by MailScanner, and is
believed to be clean.
