L -o-n-g ride! I arrived at 8;30 am Sunday. However,
the inevitable glitch occured in Amsterdam where, after failing to find
my flight to Nairobi on any board, I consulted the KLM/Kenya Air only to
learn that my flight had been canceled more than two weeks ago.
Apparently, that has been happening a lot since the violence - not
enough air traffic to Kenya so many flights are being canceled. And
Expedia never told me. Anyway, the next flight to Nairobi that night was
full so they sent me to London where I got a flight to Nairobi. Also
very l-o-n-g. (Don't ask where was my luggage.) I arrived in Nairobi on
Monday at 6:00 am, hung around 2 1/2 hours for the Amsterdam flight I
couldn't get on and there was my luggage - safe and sound! Next, I took
the luggage cart across the street to the domestic terminal and got my
ticket to Kisumu and then had almost another 8 hours to wait some more.
I carted my stuff down the road a bit to a cute restaurant where I had
yogurt and somosas for breakfast. Then back to the airport where I could
not keep my eyes open so I stuck my back pack between my legs and hooked
my leg over the cart. I must have slept for about 2 to 3 hours -I have
no idea. I think the security guard had been keeping an eye on me
because when I woke up he said, "Welcome to the world." Finally, at 7:00
Monday I landed in Kisumu and, on the tarmac, getting on the same plane
I just got off I ran into Brent McKinney (Gen Board Clerk) and John
Muhanji (Co- director with Eden Grace of Africa Ministries Office). And
there was Eden outside the gate waiting for me. I was so happy to see
her and her family. And when I went to bed that night I realized what a
treat it was to lay down after being upright for three days. The house
is great and I have my own room and own bath! (On the way to their house
I could see how many stores and homes had been burned in the
post-election violence.)

Eden was not joking when she said we'll hit the ground running. The
next morning we drove to the Lugulu Hospital where we met with the
hospital board one day and checked inventory (hospital equipment from a
$450,000 ASHA grant) all day Wed. We had to make sure that every item is
actually on site, what was the country of manufacture, and that each has
a USAID sticker on it, a condition of the grant. On Tues night we slept
in the hospital "guest house" - a cement building, very secure, bed a
thin mattress on a board, sterile water delivered to us in a bucket and
a wannabe toilet - details omitted. Kenyan meals are, as I told you,
tough chicken or tough beef stew, rice, ugali (stiff dry grits) and
greens. Tea every day at 10:00 and 4:00, is strong tea in boiled milk
with bread & butter, or chapatis or a cupcake or a fried donut called
mandazzi. Breakfasts are hard boiled eggs and fruit.

Then we drove home to Kisumu Wed eve. Thursday we spent all day driving
back and forth to Kaimosi where Eden did Kaimosi Hospital hospital
payroll. The hospital is on the grounds of the Kaimosi Yearly Meeting
Mission. This is severalhundred acres founded 96 years ago by Quakerswho
drove dirt roads in a Model T. This large community has homes, schools
and the hospital. They teach from elem thru high, technology as well as
FTC (Friends Theological College). The university is in the planning
stages. The hospital improvement since a year ago is amazing. FUM only
took it over two years ago and already patient numbers are way up, the
renovated part is actually clean and presentable and the NEW ROOF makes
a world of difference. Only one section is finished and there is more to
come as the funds come. Right now it is limited to General Medicine and
Maternity but a special AIDS wing is in process and other wards and
clinics are planned. Both hospitals treated many during the violence.
The Kikuyu staffs fled because they were being sought out and their
homes burned. Many have not returned. They most likely have returned to
their home territory.

There have been so many photo ops because it all seems so new and exotic
to me - Masaii and Samburu morans (young men) walking down the road
with their sticks, cattle market day along the road side, brick makers,
coffin makers, furniture makes, welders, vegetable stands, clothing
stalls, sheets hanging on lines, etc all along the roadside. The roads
are full always of people walking or bike riding or getting a bike ride
on a boda-boda (bicycle taxi). The roads are also full of ruts and pot
holes. Eden driving is fearless and she manages to dodge most of them -
not all. Today we went to the FUM office and this evening Eden, James,
their boys and friends are all meeting at 8:30 for dinner at an Indian
restaurant. Meals here are breakfast, tea, lunch, tea, dinner so you see
how it ends up being so late.

Internet access is not always guaranteed and I might be on the road so
don't fret if you do not hear from me often. Eden and James have
cellphones so I don't think I'll need to get one. More another day.

Love and blessings to you all and a special big hug to my children,
Lisa

--
This message has been scanned for viruses and
dangerous content by MailScanner, and is
believed to be clean.
